Change coming to downtown area as Freeman business community grows

This was the scene last week as Knodel Contractors took down two small buildings on the west side of Main Street south of Jamboree Foods and north of Vision Care Associates. The demolition makes way for a new pharmacy/variety store that owner Norm Kaufman hopes to have open by fall.  The buildings removed last week have been home to numerous businesses over the years.  The brick building pictured above (next to Vision Care) was most recently home to Stahl Auto Sales.  Prior to that it was an insurance office and for many years was home to Dr. A.A. Walters’ dentist office.  The remains of the building next to Jamboree Foods was, for many years, home to Smidt Appliance and Junior’s Freeman Barber Shop.  The space between the two buildings was home to Eddie’s Radio and TV and Lonnie’s Barber Shop before being destroyed by fire in 1970.
